WingNuts and Bolts

Sounds

This section details the Sound section

All sounds used in WingNuts 2 are .WAV audio files. They can be Mono or Stereo. The game supports 44100Hz and 24000Hz.

Sounds screen

Your standard Sounds window.

Sounds are created and then assigned to a category. We are going to look at the Game Sounds first and Game Sounds Categories second.

First make a new Sound by pressing "New sound". You will be prompted to choose a sound. As stated above, this must be a .WAV file in either 44100 or 24000 Hz.

Once you have your sound, you can play the sound and listen to it, or stop it if it is too long.

Assigned category 1-4 - We are going to return to this in a bit, as it depends on the Category which has not been created yet.

Relative volume - This is how loud the sound file will be played. A value of 1 is 100% volume, a value of 2 is 200% voluem and .50 is 50% volume. 2 is the maximum. All the sounds in WingNuts 2 fall between .5 and .8.

Game Sounds Category

To make a new Category, press the "New category" button.

First sound is random - This lets you choose between picking a random sound, or playing the first sound in the category first.

Sound picking behavior - This lets you either pick the next sound to be played randomly, or for the game to continue picking sounds in order.

Category kind for volumes - This lets you pick between 3 kinds of sounds. These settings are important as they change the behavior of the sound. A Sound Effect has medium priority and fades as you get away from it. Vocal effects have top priority and are the same volume no matter how close are far you are from the item making the sound. Engine drone has the lowest priority, and is quieter than Vocal or Sound effects.

Now, once you have set up a category, you can go back over to "Game Sounds" and assign the category to the sound. A Sound can be assigned to 4 different categories. Categories can hold an unlimited number of sounds.

The Sound Category window will only display 120 categories, but there is no limit to how many you can make, just how many you can view.
